NJ Trout in the Classroom Program
Trout in the Classroom (TIC) is a science-based program that teaches children about the importance of cold water conservation through a hands-on approach to learning. Eggs are provided by the Pequest Trout Hatchery and raised to fingerling size for release. Through this process students learn about the importance of clean, cold water conservation, not only for the trout they are raising, but also for the other organisms, including people.
The TIC program is cross-curricular and can encompass many subject areas such as science, math, art, language arts, reading, technology, music and more. While the activities associated with the program are geared towards middle school aged students, schools from Kindergarten through college levels are using the same materials.
Thanks to an enormously generous grant from the Education Enrichment Foundation of Scotch Plains-Fanwood, SPFHS is now enrolled in the NJ TIC program for the first time ever! In studying and raising trout, APES students can reinforce their knowledge of the carbon, water and nitrogen cycles (frequent topics on the AP exam) and perhaps even more importantly, take pride in giving back to their community through this project in cold water conservation
